How to give someone access to a Moodle course

This article explains how you, the instructor, can give access to your Moodle course site to someone even if he/she is not officially registered for the course.

First, click on the “Settings” link in the Administration block. . .

. . .and then scroll down to the section labeled “Enrollments” and click the radio button “Yes” next to the field “Course enrollable.”

Then scroll down to the section labeled “Availability” in the next window.

Enter a password in the field labeled “Enrollment Key.” (The “Availability” field should be set by default to “This course is available to students.” This ensures that the course appears in the list of courses in the CCLE (Moodle) portal at http://ccle.ucla.edu)

You also need to decide what level of access you’d like to be the default level for anyone enrolling in the site with the enrollment key. “Student” access is probably preferable since it will allow the enrolling person to complete any activities you’ve posted and to input data where applicable. Alternatively you may choose “Guest” access, which will disable the person’s ability to accomplish any tasks requiring data input. To choose which level of access you wish to grant, scroll up to the section labeled “General” and choose from the pull-down menu next to the “Default” field. If you do choose to grant only “Guest” access, return to the “Availability” section and make sure that the field “Guest access” is set to “Allow guests who have the key.”

Provide the enrollment key to whomever you wish to grant access to your course. If the person enrolling is to receive Student access, he will need to enter the enrollment key only when he logs in for the first time. If receiving Guest access, he will have to enter the key each time he logs into the site.
