In Moodle what does Email activated checkbox mean in User Profiles?

According to the Moodle docs “One can either enable or disable emails being sent to an address. Note that if this is disabled, students will not receive any mail whatsoever from the site.” http://docs.moodle.org/en/Edit_profile
