What is Moodle Reset Function?

What does the Reset function in the Administration menu do? And can it be disabled or removed? Is there a reason to keep it?

One of our Alpha test instructors clicked it and her role was switched from teacher to student. That seems dangerous.

Any details on why it’s considered useful would be helpful.
